Industrial Flooring for South Wales Fire and Rescue – Epoxy Flooring Case Study, Aberbargoed

Introduction

South Wales Fire and Rescue required a hard-wearing industrial floor for appliance bays at their Aberbargoed site in South Wales. The floor needed to be easy to clean and maintain, while also allowing water to be squeegeed away quickly without creating a slippery surface. Elgood Industrial Flooring was appointed to prepare the concrete and install a Britdura 750 solvent free epoxy floor coating in Pebble Grey RAL 7032, delivering a durable appliance bay floor with a built-in fine slip resistant finish in a single three-day phase.

Background

Fire and rescue appliance bays place very specific demands on an industrial floor. The surface must cope with regular vehicle use, routine cleaning and wet conditions, while still maintaining a professional appearance and reliable underfoot safety for crews moving around the area.

South Wales Fire and Rescue needed a flooring solution that balanced these practical requirements. The floor had to be easy to maintain day to day, but it also needed enough grip when wet to support safe movement in a working emergency services environment.

As British manufacturers and installers with more than 125 years of industrial flooring experience, Elgood Industrial Flooring was able to provide a complete in-house solution, from preparation through to manufacture and installation of the final coating system.

The Challenge

The project needed to meet several clear requirements:

  • Install a durable industrial floor across 500 m² of appliance bay space
  • Provide a hard-wearing coating suitable for day-to-day operational use
  • Deliver a surface that would be easy to clean and maintain
  • Ensure the finish would be easy to squeegee water from while still offering some purchase when wet
  • Include an expansion joint detail within the finished floor
  • Complete the project in a single three-day phase to suit the programme

The Solution

Elgood Industrial Flooring specified and installed a complete Britdura 750 solvent free epoxy flooring system for South Wales Fire and Rescue in Aberbargoed.

Key elements of the solution included:

  • Vacuum contained dust free shot-blasting and diamond grinding
The concrete floor was prepared using vacuum contained dust free shot-blasting and diamond grinding. This created the correct mechanical key for strong adhesion of the new coating system while helping to control dust during preparation.
  • Britdura 750 solvent free epoxy floor coating
South Wales Fire and Rescue selected Elgood Industrial Flooring’s Britdura 750 solvent free epoxy floor coating. This proven system was installed at an approximate thickness of 1 mm, creating a durable and hard-wearing industrial floor suitable for appliance bay use.
  • Pebble Grey RAL 7032 finish
The floor was finished in Pebble Grey RAL 7032, giving the space a clean, professional and practical appearance.
  • Built-in fine slip resistant finish
The completed floor included a built-in fine slip resistant finish designed not to inhibit cleaning. This helped create the right balance between easy maintenance, water removal and safer movement when the floor is wet.
  • Expansion joint detail
An expansion joint was installed as part of the finished floor build-up, supporting long-term practicality and performance in the appliance bay environment.
  • Single-source installation
The floor was manufactured, prepared and installed entirely by Elgood Industrial Flooring, ensuring consistent workmanship and a single point of responsibility throughout the project.

Outcome

The completed industrial floor provided South Wales Fire and Rescue with a durable and practical appliance bay floor in Aberbargoed:

  • A 500 m² Britdura 750 solvent free epoxy industrial floor coating
  • A hard-wearing floor designed for appliance bay use
  • A Pebble Grey RAL 7032 finish that gives the space a smart, professional appearance
  • A built-in fine slip resistant surface that remains easy to clean and easy to squeegee when wet
  • An installation completed in a single three-day phase
  • A British-manufactured flooring system installed entirely by Elgood’s own in-house team

By combining dust free preparation with a proven Britdura 750 epoxy flooring system, Elgood Industrial Flooring delivered a reliable, easy-to-maintain and fit-for-purpose industrial floor that supports the operational needs of South Wales Fire and Rescue in Aberbargoed.
