Introduction
After successfully installing two television studio floors at Bath Spa University while working with Skanska, Elgood Industrial Flooring was asked to return and treat the 150 m² service area connected to the studio complex in Bath, Somerset. The concrete floor was rough in places and had an unfinished surface, so the project required a practical and durable flooring solution that would improve performance, appearance and ease of maintenance. Elgood prepared the concrete and installed a 2 mm self-smoothing solvent free epoxy industrial floor in Light Grey with a built-in fine slip resistant finish.
Background
Bath Spa University’s television studio complex included a service area that needed to be brought up to the same professional standard as the surrounding studio spaces. Because Elgood Industrial Flooring had already completed the main television studio floors on the project, Skanska approached the team to treat this additional area as part of the wider programme.
The existing floor was a concrete slab with an uneven, unfinished surface and numerous minor defects that needed to be made good and smoothed before a final coating could be installed. The client required a floor that would be hard-wearing, practical and easy to clean, while also fitting into the programme already established for the main studio works.
The Challenge
The project needed to address several clear requirements:
- Treat approximately 150 m² of rough, unfinished concrete within the service area of the studio complex
- Prepare a floor that undulated and contained a number of minor defects that needed smoothing out
- Install a durable industrial floor that would complement the wider television studio project
- Provide a built-in fine slip resistant finish suitable for use with scrubber dryer machines
- Complete the work alongside the installation of the main studio floors as part of the wider programme
The Solution
Elgood Industrial Flooring specified and installed a complete Britdura 2000 epoxy flooring system for the Bath Spa University television studio complex service area.
Key elements of the solution included:
- Vacuum contained shot-blasting
The rough and unfinished concrete surface was prepared using vacuum contained shot-blasting. This cleaned the substrate, removed weak surface material and created the right mechanical key for the new epoxy flooring system. - Britdura 2000 solvent free epoxy flow coat
Elgood installed its Britdura 2000 solvent free epoxy flow coat at an overall thickness of approximately 2 mm, creating a self-smoothing and hard-wearing industrial floor finish. - Light Grey finish
The completed floor was finished in Light Grey, giving the service area a clean, bright and professional appearance. - Built-in fine slip resistant texture
The floor included a built-in fine slip resistant finish designed to work well with scrubber dryer cleaning, helping to balance underfoot safety with straightforward maintenance. - Integrated programme delivery
The installation of the storage and scene dock flooring was combined with the installation of the main studio floors, helping the client manage the project efficiently. Elgood’s ability to manufacture its own flooring systems also meant additional areas could be installed at short notice when required. - 5 Year Workmanship and Materials Guarantee
The project was completed with Elgood’s comprehensive 5 Year Workmanship and Materials Guarantee.
Outcome
The completed industrial flooring installation provided Bath Spa University with a durable and practical service area floor to support the wider television studio complex:
- Approximately 150 m² of Britdura 2000 solvent free epoxy flooring
- A self-smoothing 2 mm industrial floor installed over rough, unfinished concrete
- A Light Grey finish that improves presentation and usability
- A built-in fine slip resistant texture suited to routine cleaning with scrubber dryer machines
- A project completed as part of the main studio flooring programme for efficient delivery
By combining vacuum contained preparation with a proven Britdura 2000 epoxy flooring system, Elgood Industrial Flooring delivered a hard-wearing, easy-to-maintain industrial floor that helped complete the Bath Spa University television studio complex in Bath, Somerset.
