Introduction
Servisair required a hard-wearing industrial floor coating for a 600 m² operational area where the existing concrete floor was heavily soiled, rough in profile and difficult to clean. Wide recessed expansion joints had also become a hazard to the jacks used to lift vehicles of up to 40 tonnes. Elgood Industrial Flooring was appointed to prepare the substrate, repair and smooth the joints and install a Britdura 2000 solvent free epoxy flow coat in Slate Grey with yellow line markings, completing the works in two carefully planned phases to minimise disruption during the height of the holiday season.
Background
The Servisair facility needed an industrial floor that could cope with demanding service conditions while improving safety, presentation and ease of maintenance. The existing tamped concrete surface had become increasingly impractical in use, making free movement more difficult and inhibiting effective cleaning.
In addition, the condition of the wide expansion joints had deteriorated to the point where they posed a hazard to lifting equipment and day-to-day operations. Servisair needed a practical refurbishment solution that would restore the floor without causing major disruption to ongoing services at a particularly busy time of year.
As British manufacturers and installers with more than 125 years of industrial flooring experience, Elgood Industrial Flooring was able to provide a complete in-house solution tailored to the condition of the floor and the operational demands of the site.
The Challenge
The project needed to address several important requirements:
- Refurbish a 600 m² concrete floor that was heavily soiled and had a rough tamped finish
- Remove old paint and contamination to create a sound surface for a new epoxy coating
- Reduce the effect of the rough surface profile, which was making free movement difficult and inhibiting cleaning
- Repair and smooth recessed expansion joints that had become a hazard to jacks lifting vehicles of up to 40 tonnes
- Provide a durable industrial floor coating with good cleanability and fine slip resistance
- Complete the works in two phases of three days each, with minimum disruption during the height of the holiday season
The Solution
Elgood Industrial Flooring specified and installed a complete Britdura 2000 solvent free epoxy flooring system for the Servisair facility.
Key elements of the solution included:
- Dust free shot-blasting
Dust free shot-blasting was used to remove layers of paint and soiling from the concrete, cleaning the floor and creating a suitable mechanical key for the new epoxy system. - Diamond grinding to improve the surface profile
Diamond grinding was used to alleviate the worst of the tamped surface profile, helping to create a more practical and even floor for movement and cleaning. - Joint repairs and smoothing
Joints that were in poor condition were removed and replaced. All other joints were filled and smoothed over using Elgood’s Britdura semi-rigid epoxy resin, reducing the risk posed by recessed gaps and creating a more usable operating surface. - Britdura 2000 solvent free epoxy flow coat
The floor was finished with Britdura 2000 solvent free epoxy flow coat, laid to an average thickness of 2.5 to 3 mm. This system provides a durable and hard-wearing industrial floor suited to demanding service environments. - Slate Grey floor with yellow line markings
The completed floor was laid in Slate Grey with various yellow line markings, helping to improve visual organisation and layout clarity across the area. - Fine slip resistant finish
The coating has a fine slip resistant finish and can be cleaned with ease using scrubber/dryer machines, making it well suited to a busy operational environment.
All works were completed by Elgood Industrial Flooring’s own in-house installation team, ensuring consistent workmanship and a single point of responsibility from preparation through to final finishing.
Outcome
The completed industrial floor coating has provided Servisair with a safer, more durable and easier-to-maintain floor:
- A 600 m² Britdura 2000 solvent free epoxy floor laid at 2.5 to 3 mm thickness
- A refurbished surface that is easier to move across and easier to clean than the original rough tamped concrete
- Repaired and smoothed joints that reduce hazards to jacks and support safer day-to-day operations
- A Slate Grey floor with yellow line markings that improves presentation and visual organisation
- A fine slip resistant finish suitable for regular cleaning with scrubber/dryer machines
- A project completed in two carefully planned three-day phases with minimum disruption during a busy operational period
By combining dust free preparation, targeted joint repairs and a proven Britdura 2000 epoxy flow coat, Elgood Industrial Flooring delivered a practical, hard-wearing industrial floor that improved safety, movement and maintenance for Servisair.
