Industrial Floor Coating for Port of Tilbury – Epoxy Flooring Case Study, Essex

Introduction

The Port of Tilbury required a cost-effective and hard-wearing industrial floor coating for an import centre area in Tilbury, Essex. The existing 126 m² floor was a heavily tamped, open textured concrete surface with layers of solvent based paint, leaving it rough underfoot and difficult to present to a good standard. Elgood Industrial Flooring was appointed to prepare the concrete and install a 2 mm Britdura 2000 solvent free epoxy floor in Dusty Grey RAL 7037, creating a smoother, more professional and easy-to-clean industrial floor in just four days.

Background

Following successful Elgood installations in 2006 and 2012, Hyundai selected Elgood Industrial Flooring again for this project at the Port of Tilbury. That previous performance gave the client confidence that the new floor would deliver the same long-term reliability and professional finish.

The floor formed part of the import centre and needed to be in keeping with Hyundai facilities elsewhere. That meant the final industrial floor had to match the established Dusty Grey RAL 7037 colour used across Hyundai workshops in the UK, while also improving the appearance and practicality of the area.

As British manufacturers and installers with more than 125 years of industrial flooring experience, Elgood Industrial Flooring was able to manufacture the required colour specifically for this contract and deliver the full system in-house.

The Challenge

The project needed to meet several clear requirements:

  • Refurbish 126 m² of heavily tamped, open textured concrete with layers of solvent based paint
  • Reduce the roughness of the existing surface profile so the floor was more practical in use
  • Provide a cost-effective industrial floor coating that would improve the presentation of the import centre
  • Match the Dusty Grey RAL 7037 colour used in Hyundai workshops elsewhere in the UK
  • Complete the full installation in four days to suit the programme

The Solution

Elgood Industrial Flooring specified and installed a complete Britdura 2000 solvent free epoxy flooring system for the Port of Tilbury project.

Key elements of the solution included:

  • Shot-blasting and diamond grinding
A combination of shot-blasting and diamond grinding was used to prepare the concrete. Shot-blasting cleaned the floor and created the correct mechanical key for the new coating, while diamond grinding was used to alleviate the worst of the surface profile and improve the finished result.
  • Britdura 2000 solvent free epoxy flow coat
Hyundai selected Elgood Industrial Flooring’s Britdura 2000 solvent free epoxy flow coat, installed at a nominal thickness of 2 mm. This system was chosen to provide a cost-effective, hard-wearing industrial floor with a smoother and more professional finish.
  • Dusty Grey RAL 7037 finish
To keep the area in line with Hyundai facilities elsewhere, the floor was manufactured in Dusty Grey RAL 7037 specifically for this contract. This helped create a consistent corporate appearance while lifting the presentation of the import centre.
  • Fast four-day programme
The installation was completed in four days, giving the client a quick turnaround and allowing the area to be brought back into use without unnecessary delay.

All works were manufactured, prepared and installed by Elgood Industrial Flooring, ensuring consistent workmanship and a single point of responsibility throughout the project.

Outcome

The completed industrial floor coating provided the Port of Tilbury with a durable and visually improved flooring solution in Essex:

  • A 126 m² Britdura 2000 solvent free epoxy industrial floor
  • A smoother, more practical surface created from heavily tamped painted concrete
  • A hard-wearing floor coating that lifted the overall presentation of the import centre
  • A Dusty Grey RAL 7037 finish that matched Hyundai workshops elsewhere in the UK
  • A project completed in just four days

By combining shot-blasting, diamond grinding and a 2 mm Britdura 2000 solvent free epoxy flow coat, Elgood Industrial Flooring delivered a practical, professional and hard-wearing industrial floor for the Port of Tilbury in Essex.
