Versa London Studios – Television Studio Floor Case Study, Acton, West London

Introduction

Versa acquired a former Diageo warehouse in Acton, West London, in 2021 and set about converting it into a 920 m² television studio to add to its growing portfolio of broadcast facilities. To support multi-purpose production use, the new space required a high quality studio floor that was smooth, durable and clearly marked to aid set building and safe circulation. Elgood Industrial Flooring was appointed to prepare the existing slab and install a Presentation Studio Floor System, delivering a robust operating surface complete with fire lane and numeral markings to guide layout and production workflows.

Background

The Acton building had previously operated as a warehouse, with a concrete floor that carried historic coatings and residual latex compounds from earlier use. For television production, Versa needed a studio floor that would:

  • Provide a clean, even surface for sets, scenery, cameras and equipment

  • Incorporate visual markings such as a fire lane and numerals to support planning, access and layout

  • Offer anti static performance to help protect sensitive broadcast electronics

  • Be robust enough for repeated set builds, equipment movements and day-to-day production activities

As British manufacturers with over 125 years of experience and a long track record in television studio floors, Elgood Industrial Flooring was selected to design, manufacture and install the complete studio floor system using its own in-house team.

The Challenge

The project required Elgood to overcome a series of practical and technical challenges:

  • Converting a warehouse concrete slab into a studio-ready operating surface suitable for television production

  • Removing contamination, including residual latex compounds, and ensuring the substrate was properly prepared for a new floor system

  • Delivering a durable studio floor capable of withstanding frequent reconfiguration of sets, lighting, camera platforms and other equipment

  • Incorporating a clearly defined fire lane and numeral markings into the finished floor to assist with set positioning, access routes and emergency planning

  • Completing the works to programme so that Versa could bring the new studio into operation on schedule

The finished floor needed to perform reliably under the demands of commercial studio use while also presenting a professional, clean appearance for clients and production teams.

The Solution

Elgood Industrial Flooring installed its in-house manufactured Presentation Studio Floor System, designed specifically for television and presentation studios.

Key elements of the solution included:

  • Vacuum contained shot blasting
The existing concrete slab was prepared using vacuum contained shot blasting to clean the surface and remove contamination. This process provided a consistent mechanical key for the studio floor build-up and helped manage dust within the building.

  • Diamond grinding and removal of residual latex
Diamond grinding was used to remove residual latex compounds and any remaining traces of previous floor treatments. This ensured that weak or incompatible materials were removed and that the substrate was sound and ready to accept the new system.

  • Presentation Studio Floor System installation
Elgood applied its Presentation Studio Floor specification across the studio area, creating a smooth, level surface suitable for camera work, set building and frequent production changes. The system is formulated to provide a tough, easy-to-clean finish with good resistance to everyday studio wear.

  • Fire lane and numeral markings
As part of the installation, Elgood incorporated a fire lane and numeral markings into the studio floor. These features help production teams position sets accurately, maintain safe access routes and manage the space more efficiently during busy turnarounds.

All work was carried out by Elgood’s own small, full-time installation team, ensuring consistent workmanship and a single point of responsibility from initial preparation through to final handover. The installation was completed in May 2021, aligning with Versa’s overall fit-out schedule for the new studio.

Outcome

The completed studio floor at Versa London Studios in Acton provides a reliable, production-ready surface that underpins day-to-day operations:

  • A smooth, durable Presentation Studio Floor System tailored to the demands of television production

  • A clean, professional-looking studio environment that reflects Versa’s brand and client expectations

  • An operating surface with integrated fire lane and numeral markings, making it easier to plan sets, maintain access routes and manage safety

  • An anti static, easy-to-clean floor that is well suited to regular reconfiguration and intensive use

  • A British manufactured and installed solution delivered on programme by an experienced, in-house team

By transforming the former warehouse concrete slab into a purpose-designed studio floor, Elgood Industrial Flooring has helped Versa maximise the potential of its 920 m² Acton studio, supporting flexible, high quality production for a wide range of clients.
