Industrial Floor Coating for Tyco Valves in Market Harborough

Introduction

Tyco Valves required a cost-effective and hard-wearing industrial floor coating for its Distribution Centre in Market Harborough. The existing 3,200 m² concrete floor was generally in satisfactory condition, but the gangways had worn and the surface had an accumulation of old floor paint that needed to be removed before a new epoxy coating could be installed.

Elgood Industrial Flooring was appointed to refurbish the floor using Britdura 750 Highbuild Solvent Free Epoxy Coating. The project was delivered in four phases, including two weekday visits and two weekend visits, each lasting three days, to minimise disruption to order picking and ongoing operations. The finished industrial floor used contrasting colours including Slate Grey, French Blue, Light Green and Yellow to create a clear, practical floor layout.

Background

Tyco Valves had asked Elgood Industrial Flooring for budget prices a couple of years before proceeding with the refurbishment of the floor at its Market Harborough Distribution Centre in 2011. The client needed a floor that would improve worn gangways, remove the build-up of old paint and provide a durable industrial floor coating suitable for an occupied operational facility.

A roller-only application would not have been sufficient for the condition and long-term demands of the floor. At the same time, a 1.5 mm to 2 mm flowed flooring system was considered more than the project required. Elgood therefore specified Britdura 750 as a cost-effective alternative, offering a trowel-applied industrial floor coating with an average finished thickness of approximately 1 mm.

As British manufacturers and installers with more than 125 years of experience in industrial flooring, Elgood Industrial Flooring was able to provide a complete in-house solution. The solvent free Britdura system and vacuum contained preparation methods also helped reduce odour and dust, allowing parts of the works to take place while the facility remained operational.

The Challenge

The project needed to address several clear requirements:

Refurbish approximately 3,200 m² of concrete flooring

Prepare gangways that had become worn through use

Remove an accumulation of old floor paint

Provide a cost-effective industrial floor coating that offered more durability than a roller-only application

Avoid the unnecessary cost of a thicker flowed flooring system

Create a clear floor layout using contrasting colours and markings

Minimise disruption to order picking within an occupied Distribution Centre

Complete the works across four carefully planned phases

The Solution

Elgood Industrial Flooring specified and installed a complete Britdura 750 Highbuild Solvent Free Epoxy Coating system for Tyco Valves in Market Harborough.

Key elements of the solution included:

Dust free shot-blasting

Dust free shot-blasting was used to provide a clean physical key on the concrete surface. This preparation method helped remove old paint build-up and prepare the substrate for strong adhesion of the new industrial floor coating.

Diamond grinding

Diamond grinding was used alongside shot-blasting to remove the accumulation of old floor paint. This helped ensure the existing floor was properly cleaned, profiled and ready for the Britdura 750 coating system.

Britdura 750 Highbuild Solvent Free Epoxy Coating

Tyco Valves selected Elgood Industrial Flooring’s Britdura 750 Highbuild Solvent Free Epoxy Coating. This three-coat system is applied by trowel, helping achieve an even distribution of resin across the floor.

The system was well suited to the project because it provided a cost-effective industrial floor coating with a more robust finish than a roller-only application, while avoiding the additional cost of a thicker 1.5 mm to 2 mm flowed floor where that level of build was unnecessary.

Slate Grey, French Blue, Light Green and Yellow floor layout

Contrasting colours were used to design the floor layout, including Slate Grey, French Blue, Light Green and Yellow. This created a more organised and visually defined industrial floor, supporting clearer movement and operational use within the Distribution Centre.

Fine slip resistant finish

The Britdura 750 coating was installed with a fine slip resistant finish. This provided practical grip underfoot while remaining easy to clean using scrubber dryer machines.

Phased installation programme

The 3,200 m² industrial floor coating was installed in four phases. The programme included two weekday phases and two weekend phases, each lasting three days, to minimise disruption to order picking.

Because the Britdura flooring system is solvent free and has very little odour, and because preparation methods were vacuum contained, two phases could be installed while the facility remained operational.

Outcome

The completed industrial floor coating provided Tyco Valves with a durable, practical and visually organised floor for its Market Harborough Distribution Centre:

A 3,200 m² Britdura 750 Highbuild Solvent Free Epoxy industrial floor coating

A cost-effective alternative to a thicker flowed flooring system

A more robust solution than a roller-only coating application

Removal of old paint build-up using shot-blasting and diamond grinding

Improved worn gangways within the Distribution Centre

A contrasting colour layout using Slate Grey, French Blue, Light Green and Yellow

A fine slip resistant finish suitable for scrubber dryer cleaning

A four-phase programme designed to minimise disruption to order picking

Installation completed across weekday and weekend phases

By combining dust free preparation, diamond grinding, Britdura 750 epoxy coating and a carefully managed phased installation programme, Elgood Industrial Flooring delivered a hard-wearing industrial floor for Tyco Valves in Market Harborough. The finished floor provided the durability, cleanability and clear visual layout required for a busy Distribution Centre, while helping reduce disruption to daily operations.
