120 Years And Counting of Industrial Flooring
Few can say they began as a family business over a century ago and have stayed that that way ever since. Fewer still can say they’ve been providing world-class floors to some of the UK’s most successful companies the whole time.
From our humble beginnings almost 120 years ago, we’ve become one of the longest standing family-owned flooring businesses in the UK. Four generations have taken the company from strength to strength, expanding our client base, broadening our product offerings, and building a greater presence in the rich landscape of British business and industry.
Along the timeline below, we track the company’s long and successful journey through the major events in its history. From June 1998 to the present day, you can discover how we went from our founding by the first generation to the handover to the fourth generation, our first television studio floor to projects with names like BBC, Sky Sports, Hyundai, and the Henry Moore Foundation, and from a small, unknown company made in London to an international, world-class provider of industrial flooring.
Use the arrows below to browse the Elgood history timeline. If you’d like more information on any project in particular, check out our flooring projects page or get in touch with a member of our team. Here’s to another 120 years of laying the ground beneath the feet of some of the UK’s biggest businesses, and marching forward as a proud, family-owned, British manufacturer.

THE HENRY MOORE FOUNDATION GALLERY
Elgood Flooring were contacted by the foundation and consulted as to a suitable floor covering for the new gallery. The converted building had an unusual concrete floor which demanded careful consideration. In addition to the floor covering having to be functional, the floor also had to be both aesthetically pleasing and congruous with the surroundings of the gallery.
KONE LIFTS, BRISTOL
A floor covering that was designed for use both in assembly areas and gangways.
SHARPS BEDROOMS, WOLVERHAMPTON
Instead of having solid gangways installed, Sharps Bedrooms decided to have our Permanent Epoxy line markings laid. The photographs show the finished lines. The line markings have a longevity and appearance far superior to spray painted lines.
KING STURGE, HEDGE END, SOUTHAMPTON
The property agent King Sturge required a floor for their client that was suitable for various types of industrial working environments and would help lift the overall presentation of the building. A primary concern of King Sturge was that our Workmanship and Materials Guarantee was transferable to the incoming tenant.
SMALL & TIDMAS, BODMIN, CORNWALL
Small & Tidmas requested a floor that would even the undulating and badly worn concrete to give it a new lease of life as well as help lift the presentation of the factory. Additionally, Small & Tidmas were keen that the new floor should meet their budgeting criteria and strike the correct balance between cost and performance.
AVICA AEROSPACE, HEMEL HEMPSTEAD
A cost effective Epoxy floor coating to improve the appearance of the floor and lift the overall presentation of the production area. Avica chose a specific BS colour from outside of the stock colour range for no extra cost.

A floor coating that would improve the appearance of both the Goods inward and Dispatch areas. It was important that the coating was hardwearing and able to retain a good standard of appearance in the long term.

BBC TC6, WHITE CITY, LONDON
TC6 one of the busiest studios at the BBC (650 sq m) required an overhaul of the operating floor. The BBC set their own demanding camera tracking requirements. These had to be met through a day of rigorous camera tests. The new level studio floor passed the tests.
