Introduction
Technicut required a cost-effective and hard-wearing industrial floor coating for its Sheffield engineering facility. The existing 1,300 m² concrete floor was worn, previously shot-blasted and affected by some oil contamination, so it needed a system that could both improve appearance and provide long-term durability in a busy engineering environment with fork lift traffic. Elgood Industrial Flooring was appointed to prepare the floor and install a Britdura 750 high-build solvent free epoxy floor coating in Slate Grey and French Blue, complete with permanent yellow line markings, delivering the project in one five-day phase.
Background
Technicut operates in a demanding engineering environment where the floor has to cope with regular traffic, machinery movement and the daily pressures of production. The client needed an industrial floor that would upgrade the appearance of the building while still being practical and durable enough for long-term service.
Elgood Industrial Flooring had previously completed a successful Britdura 500 solvent free epoxy floor coating installation at Technicut’s new facility, which helped secure confidence in the proposed specification for this larger project. Based on that performance, Elgood was selected to provide a more robust high-build solution for the worn existing floor in Sheffield.
As British manufacturers and installers with over 125 years of experience, Elgood Industrial Flooring was able to supply a complete in-house solution, from preparation through to final finishing and line marking.
The Challenge
The project needed to address several important requirements:
- Refurbish a worn and previously shot-blasted old concrete floor with some oil contamination
- Provide a cost-effective industrial floor coating that would also offer long-term durability
- Install a floor finish suitable for an engineering environment with fork lift traffic
- Improve the overall appearance of the facility while maintaining practicality
- Incorporate a clear floor layout with gangways and hazard hatchings
- Complete the installation in one five-day phase to minimise disruption
The Solution
Elgood Industrial Flooring specified and installed a complete Britdura 750 high-build solvent free epoxy flooring system tailored to the needs of Technicut’s Sheffield facility.
Key elements of the solution included:
- Dust free shot-blasting
Dust free shot-blasting was used to provide a light physical key to the worn concrete floor. This helped clean the surface and create the correct profile for strong adhesion of the new epoxy system. - Diamond grinding to edges
Diamond grinding was used to prepare the edges and more detailed areas that could not be reached with the main preparation equipment, ensuring a consistent standard across the full floor area. - Britdura 750 high-build solvent free epoxy floor coating
Technicut selected Elgood Industrial Flooring’s Britdura 750 high-build solvent free epoxy floor coating. This system is applied by trowel to a thickness of approximately 750 microns to 1 mm. Britdura 750 was chosen specifically to help alleviate the existing surface profile and provide a good wearing surface for the long term. - Slate Grey and French Blue floor layout
The floor was finished in Slate Grey and French Blue to create a more organised and professional working environment suited to engineering use. - Permanent epoxy yellow line markings
Elgood installed easy-to-clean permanent epoxy yellow line markings to Technicut’s floor plan, including gangways and hazard hatchings, helping to improve layout clarity and support safer day-to-day movement throughout the building. - Fine slip resistant finish
The completed floor has a fine slip resistant finish and can be cleaned with ease using scrubber / dryer machines, making it practical for a busy industrial setting.
All works were completed by Elgood Industrial Flooring’s own in-house installation team, ensuring consistent workmanship and a single point of responsibility from preparation through to final finishing.
Outcome
The completed industrial floor coating provided Technicut with a durable and visually improved engineering floor in Sheffield:
- A 1,300 m² Britdura 750 high-build solvent free epoxy industrial floor coating
- A hard-wearing surface designed for an engineering environment with fork lift traffic
- A practical solution that helped alleviate the worn surface profile of the existing concrete floor
- A Slate Grey and French Blue floor layout with permanent yellow gangways and hazard hatchings
- A fine slip resistant finish that remains easy to clean and maintain
- A five-day single-phase installation that minimised disruption to the site
By combining dust free preparation with a proven Britdura 750 epoxy flooring system, Elgood Industrial Flooring delivered a cost-effective, hard-wearing and clearly organised industrial floor that supports both the operational demands and presentation goals of Technicut’s Sheffield facility.
