Condition of Floors

The concrete had historically been substandard and soft. The heavy loads and constant 24 hour pedestrian traffic had aggravated this problem resulting in the concrete losing its original surface finish, leaving the aggregate exposed. Dust and the tired appearance that the floor lent the building were also of concern.

Installation Programme

The installation was planned to be completed in a set number of phases over a period of roughly four years. Each installation was invoiced at an agreed square metre rate to allow the client the flexibility to release any given area for any one particular phase.

Small & Tidmas Required

Small & Tidmas requested a floor that would even the undulating and badly worn concrete to give it a new lease of life as well as help lift the presentation of the factory. Additionally, Small & Tidmas were keen that the new floor should meet their budgeting criteria and strike the correct balance between cost and performance.

Preparation

The photograph opposite demonstrates how the soft concrete was smoothed by an industrial diamond grinding machine. The pale and dark areas respectively showing where the concrete had and had not been treated, at that point in time.

Shot blasting was used to lightly texture and clean the surface. All preparation methods were vacuum contained to allow the factory to remain operational whilst we carried out the installation.

The joints were attended to using a bridging compound to reduce the transfer of any movement through to the new floor in the future.
